Enjoying your Rugby
The Briars is the inner west home for players who want to enjoy their Rugby competitively and socially without, the strenuous time commitments Sydney grade players must sacrifice. Lets face it, if you’re that good a Rugby player then you’ve been snapped up by a Shute Shield Club and prepared to train four nights a week. This can also be a tough schedule for those of you who are furthering your studies after school or who have started a new job. Don’t give up on playing the greatest game on earth. Join The Briars!
Briars provides an outlet so you can continue to enjoy your Rugby with:
- Smart structured and efficient training on one night of the week
- Fitness professionals assisting you with programs to manage in your time
- Experienced Coaches
- Established Rugby Pathways with Sydney Rugby Union, Waratahs & Rugby Australia for those players wishing to further their Rugby
- The Best Club LTD and on ground facilities – Briars Sports and Rothwell Park
- Rugby Scholarships in line with NSW Suburban Rugby’s Amateur Policy
- Career & Personal Support through our own Careers Advisory and Chaplaincy Service
- Annual Preseason Gold Coast Rugby Tour – Colts Grade

Support for all levels of skill
We offer various standards of rugby, so it really doesn’t matter if you haven’t played before. We have strong leadership groups, so Briars will never let you fail or falter. Our experienced heads can teach you rugby one-on-one, you just need to bring your enthusiasm. Currently we are fielding three open teams and an under 21s in the senior part of the club. In previous years the club has had up to 5 teams as well as the U21s. There is always a place for everyone who is registered and has trained.
Training and Social Events
Our season is long and demanding and as such we recommend that you read the social links, as we like to break the season up and celebrate our progress. Preseason traditionally begins in February, with games starting in April going to September. You can follow us on Facebook or Instagram to get regular updates at hand for season commencement dates and social calendar events.
Our modern Clubhouse and on ground facilities are the envy of many Rugby Clubs. We have been lucky that our Briars forefathers (through the Briars Foundation) have provided for our future with the development of Rothwell Park and recently providing new forwards training scrummaging equipment. Briars Sports is where we choose to celebrate after a Saturday of Rugby and the dance floor lights up in the evening with our own in house Newington Old Boy DJs on the decks!

Come along and say G’Day
